The Brixton Workshop Collective X O-M Ceramics
Carrie Lau’s use of materials as a springboard for inspiration is something we can relate to here at Brixton, and her enthusiasm for the power of collaboration makes her a natural fit in the Workshop Collective.
Meet the Maker
Carrie Lau — O-M Ceramics
What inspired you to start your business?
“I have felt connected since I first learned ceramics. It makes me become more mindful at the moment of creating. The more that I make, I realize I enjoy the way that I can communicate my ideas to myself through my hands and work. I decided to take my art to market, and O-M Ceramics gradually grew into a brand.”
Was there a person who helped teach you your craft?
“I've been meeting a lot of people on my journey who have helped me grow, from design to ceramics studios, craft market to art show, ceramics buddies to small business owners. I am so grateful everyone shared their experiences and stories that inspired me so that I can stick with my intention. ”
Why is it so important to you personally to hand-craft your pieces?
“Using my hands to create brings me back to my childhood. There is freedom, innocence, and playfulness over there that you don't over-think too much. The touch of texture of materials opens my sense of creation. The materials itself inspired me and that was part of my creative process to begin a project. It gives every single piece a character; it is truly one of a kind by being hand-crafted.”
How does Sustainability play a role in your approach to the goods you create?
“The practice of sustainability is important. I have been using, recycling and repurposing the materials as much as I can to reduce any waste from my process.”
Why did working with Brixton on the Workshop Collective feel like the right opportunity?
“Collaborating with brands and people is always exciting. I love the idea from Workshop Collective to bring hand-crafted artists together and support each other. I appreciate the opportunity, and being able to showcase my practice, process and work alongside other amazing artists and Brixton is rewarding.”
